“HEY, YOU DUMB PIGS!” : Writing a Robert Munsch Story

  • Write Your Darndest

Last week, we watched a play by Kaleidoscope Theatre, called MUNSCH-ersice. The children were pleased to see their favourite story book come alive.  We were so enthused that we decided to write our very own Robert Munsch-style story.

Darn

First, we had to read a couple of books to find out a few tips.  After a few funny stories, we discovered that….

  1.  Robert Munsch’s favourite number is #3.  Yes, 3!!! Yup, it’s 3.  He repeated events, words, jokes, etc. three times.  This reminded us of the Three Little Pigs story, or The Three Billy Goat’s Gruff story, or The Three Bears.
  2. Robert Munsch repeated dialogues often, so much so that the children had memorized them.  They could recite what the mother or the father or the daughter would say. Just like in the story, Pigs:  “Hey, you dumb pigs!” was repeated a few time.
  3. Robert Munsch’s characters like to run around, stomp, jump, etc. many times!
  4. They were all funny and silly.

(I’m sure you can find many other characteristics of Robert Munsch stories, but we decided to stick to these ones above.)

Then we decided to WRITE OUR DARNDEST.
