Encouraging Children To Write During the Summer

  • Write Your Darndest

Sunshine! Blue Skies! Sandy Beaches!

Who would want to stay indoors when the weather outside is so inviting? There are crabs to catch, ice cream to lick, pools to dive in. Visiting Grandpa, biking down the trails, or just counting the animals in the clouds are far more fun than sitting at a desk writing.

How can we ever make Johnny remember his spelling and maintain his reading skills?
Well, I have a few EASY lures for catching our slippery summer fish.

WRITE LISTS!

  • List the cars that pass by.
  • List grocery items.
  • List yummiest summer foods
  • List ice cream flavours
  • List shell names
  • List Pokemon characters (Yup, gotta ride with the tide!)
  • List rock bands
  • List pets’ names
  • List things to bring to the beach/picnic
  • List camping gear
  • List places you visited
  • List road signs
  • Etcetera!!!!
You know how exciting it gets finding out who can do the mostest. Well, lists can be pretty exciting… finding out who can write the longest list… the mostest items.

Grab a notebook, journal, or staple a wad of paper… any book will do…. and create scrapbook.
Slap on some pictures, drawings, poems, ephemera, souvenirs.
Write about each item.  One word will do… two words are better…. and sentences are AWESOME! It’s all fun!!

WRITE A JOURNAL

At the end of the day, settle down with your secret notebook and tell it everything you experienced for the day.  Scream at it (in written words) when you get angry. Cry to it… lean on its shoulder and tell it how unfair the world is. Whisper (in writing) who your secret crush is or who you hate (for the day). Make your journal your BFF.

THE TRICK is to keep those writing activities short, but frequent.

Keep summer fun!
