Welcome, teachers! These are writing lessons I use for my class. Feel free to use my ideas in your classroom and tell me how your lessons went. I welcome ideas and suggestions from my eager readers.
You will notice my standard procedure:
- Introduction: Provide a hook to spark enthusiasm.
- My sample: Model and inspire.
- The assignment: Provide clear expectations.
- Brainstorm ideas: It is best to draw ideas from the class. This is just a sample of possible ideas.
Where do the children write their assignments?
- Journal – I believe in journals. It is a place where one can write freely without being judged. Let the creativity flow without fear of grades or comments. I do not grade or correct compositions written in journals. (My students have a separate journal that I promise never to read.) The child is free to express him/herself. After all, the object of this exercise is to develop a love for written expression and hone creativity. Grammar and punctuation can be taught in other lessons or exercises.
- Draft Sheet – The student is aware that s/he can write freely, but is expected to re-read the composition and edit his own work. Teachers may edit this piece, as well.
- Final Copy – This is only written after editing is accomplished. It is usually written in beautiful handwriting or typed from a computer, with optional borders or decorations.
Samples for the Gallery
If you’re stoked, send me your favourite samples (pictures or text) through my email, writethedarndestthings@gmail.com. That would be delightful.
However, please send me only your favourite ones, or I will be swamped!
I cannot publish all the entries due to space issues.
