“What did you do last summer?” I’m sure your teacher will ask you that.
BLAH! They always ask you that.
But, wait! You’ll be ready to give them a story that’s far from BLAH…. a story that actually sizzles with excitement!
Last summer, I went to Tofino with my daughter, Alexa, for a relaxing, reading, slouching time. We loved strolling in the beach, feeling the sand between our toes, and watching the surfers defy the wind.
It was peaceful. It was lovely. Alexa dozed off on the beach mat while reading her novel while I soaked in the breathtaking view.
I decided to take a long walk and hunt for hermit crabs and ornate shells, leaving Alexa in slumberland. The sand felt cool beneath the soles of my feet. The swishing of the waves mesmerized me. I climbed a rocky hill with huge holes and crevices in it and wondered, was it a secret home of a strange creature in the past?
When I returned, I could not find Alexa on the beach mat where I left her. The mat was scrunched up like a prune, the wind flapping the pages of her book, letting the bookmark escape with the wind. Her flip flops were gnarled into shreds. Where was Alexa? Panic slithered up my spine.
Then, I heard a commotion nearby. The village people were surrounding a beheaded, ginormous python! They were chattering, screaming, hovering around this monster! One man looked triumphant, standing on the snake and waving his sickle in the air.
Suddenly, the python started to move. The crowd gasped. It wriggled and people started to panic and run in all directions. The man with his sickle fell off balance. The beheaded monster vomited red goop off its gaping hole. The goop squirmed, and then rose like a resurrected mummy.
“Aaah,” the crowd screamed with fear.
The man with a sickle raised his weapon, ready to strike.
“Yuck,” the goop yelled.
“Huh?” the crowd froze.
Then I recognized the goop. It was Alexa!
Did that story really happen? Naah. I really went to Tofino. Alexa really was with me. Alexa really read a book.
But, you guessed it, a monstrous python did NOT swallow her.
How did I get the idea?
I saw this really, really gross picture of an enormous python on the internet. (Don’t worry, it was fake. They used Photoshop to edit it.) I decided to include it in my story.
- Write what you really did during the summer.
- Look for a freaky picture. Or drum up a strange incident.
- Change the ending of your story to include that strange incident.
- Do Challenge #1.
- Voila! You wrote a darn good story.
- If you are my student, write this story in your journal and submit it personally to me.
- If you are not my student, you may write this in your journal and submit it to your teacher or parent.
- Or you may email me at writethedarndestthings@gmail.com. I accept pictures of your pages, too.
- While you are sitting at the beach, you see a hermit crab and decide to poke it. It hides in its hole, so you pour your juice in it. Then, the crab emerges, but this time it’s a hundred times larger than you!
- You were swimming in a lake. You feel a seaweed tickling you. As you pull it, you discover that the seaweed was really the Lochness monster!
- You were jumping on the trampoline of your neighbour. You jumped so high, you reached Mars!

Aw, this was a very nice post. Taking a few minutes and actual effort
to create a top notch article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a
lot and don’t seem to get nearly anything done.
