What Are You Thankful For?

  • Write Your Darndest

Happy Thanksgiving!

“What are you thankful for?” your teacher would ask.

FRUIT LOOPS!

PIZZA!

MINECRAFT!

CHOCOLATE CAKE!

SMARTIES!

XBOX ONE!

LEGO!

HOCKEY STICK!

Yeah, they’re all exciting things to have…

But what if you lived in a house made of cardboard, weighed down by old rubber tires so the wind doesn’t blow it away? And what if you did not own a pair shoes or a nice dress?  What if you never tasted a chocolate bar and only ate fish and rice every day? What will you be thankful for?

Watch this video and tell me what you think.

We have a lot to be thankful for.  A lot.

Yet when you see these children in the video, they are happy, and they will tell you that they have a lot to be thankful for. In fact, they were so thankful that we visited them.  They were so thankful for the old stuff toys my daughters gave them and the junky Halloween candies we offered.

They will also tell you that they are thankful for the rice on their table, the fruits in their backyard, and the roof over their heads. They are most thankful for their family and the love that they share.

I wished for a brand new pair of Nike’s

Until I saw a child with no shoes.

Then I was thankful for my old runners.

I wished for a trip to Toys R Us

Until I saw a child tossing pebbles for a game of marbles

Then I was thankful for my old stuffy

I wished for a dozen Ooh La La cupcakes

Until I saw a child begging for food

Then I was thankful to eat my broccoli
